The online retail giant Amazon is on the verge of opening a warehouse in Salford. The company has been looking for a location to construct its first North-West facility for the last two years and seems to have elected Salford as its preferred location.
The one million square foot warehouse would be established in Port Salford, the new freight terminal and inland port currently under construction on the Manchester Ship Canal. The facility could see the light in the summer 2015, when the location is ready for occupation, and will deliver 1,000 jobs in Salford.
According to sources, Amazon would also be looking for more than one warehouse in the region. The company apparently first considered a site in Liverpool before choosing Salford.
Commenting on the reports, Salford elected mayor, Ian Stewart, said: “This indicates the strategic value of the site and shows Salford is ready to do business with global brands. What we need to see as soon as possible is real jobs on the ground that people in Salford can apply for to help boost the city’s regeneration and growth.”
The construction of the first phase of Port Salford will start this year with a new terminal, access roads, rail connection, and wharf.
The development of the new terminal is already a big step in Salford’s regeneration and the presence of an Amazon facility on the site would be a huge economic leap forward for the growing city, with the creation of a thousand new jobs.
Salford has been at the center of a successful development plan for the last decade and is now becoming a destination of choice for many companies, following the BBC which relocated in MediaCityUK, Salford, a few years ago. The city is now ready to do international business, as the next logical step in its growth.
